Is Catharine McKinnon Human?

The Guardian has a long article and interview with radical feminist Catharine McKinnon. Those of you over the age of 25 will remember her as the Robin to Andrea Dworkin’s Batman during the anti-porn wars of the 1980s. (Actually, that metaphor creates some seriously disturbing images, but I’ll go with it anyway.) McKinnon has released a new book called “Are Women Human?” and in it she goes on fighting her Read More …

The Norwegians Look At Women, Porn and All That

I’ve been contacted by Anne Sabo, an academic who is researching women’s porn, and the changing face of gender relations within pornography. She’s co-hosting an academic conference at the University of Oslo in Norway in June entitled Heterosexual desire in gender equality discourse: A point of trouble? Now, don’t let the title put you off. This is actually an important roundtable discussion about women and porn, new and alternative porn, Read More …

Cunnilingus and the Hite Report

It’s nearly Cake and Cunnilingus Day! Make sure you stock up on the mudcake along with those easter eggs, girls. It’s time to lie back and enjoy some tongue-lovin! I added an article to that site today, and in writing it I got The Hite Report off the shelf, looking for some statistics on cunnilingus. It occurred to me that Shere Hite’s groundbreaking survey of female sexuality is now thirty Read More …

Penis Puppetry Leads To D-Cuppetry

I’ve long been a fan of Puppetry of the Penis. I’ve even interviewed the Aussie stars twice for For The Girls, and had a few amusing photos taken with them. One of the things I asked the guys was did they think there’d ever be a female version of their show. They said no. Girls bits weren’t really meant for puppetry, they thought, and besides, you would be able to Read More …

The SFWeekly Dislikes Cake

The SF Weekly has a very long article on the Cake movement… and bits of it have me shaking my head. Overall, it gives a negative view of the Cake women, and suggests that they’re not “real” feminists. Having just written a huge post about the way some feminists make assumptions about other women’s motivations and intelligence, I now see a fine example of this mindset in that article. Take Read More …

Onyer, Pink

I very rarely drag myself away from my established music collection to listen to anything new, because the majority of the stuff currently “charting” is such crap. I have an especially low tolerance for rap and R&B, because most of it is repetitive, obnoxious, sexist garbage. Thus, I’m over the moon to read the lyrics of Pink’s latest song, Stupid Girls: What happened to the dreams of a girl president Read More …

“A Piece of Cake” vs “Female Chauvinist Pigs”

Last week For The Girls published my review of the book A Piece of Cake: Recipes for Female Sexual Pleasure. Written by Melinda Gallagher and Emily Scarlet Kramer, the book is essentially the manifesto of the five-year-old CAKE movement. It tells the real-life stories of women’s sexual experiences and fantasies. A while ago I posted about CAKE in my old blog. CAKE parties feature porn viewings, male and female strippers, Read More …

More On The Impenetrable Devices “Chastity Belts”

In January I wrote a post called “Chastity Belts Gone Feral”. It looked at the work of an artist who has created a series of intricate metal “chastity belts” designed to protect women from rape. The artworks were inspired by true-life stories of rape, and the subsequent anguish as expressed by victims. Ira Sherman, the artist, has contacted me and offered some more photos of his work. He also made Read More …

Women Keen To See Matthew McConaughey Naked

Following the widely circulated article called “Where are the naked men?” – discussed in this post – the Chicago Sun-Times has done a little research. They asked their female readers which man they would prefer to see naked. The overwhelming response was Matthew McConaughey (and seeing this pic, can you blame them?) Seems ladies in the Chicago area can’t get enough of the lovely Matt, although they voted for a Read More …

Female Sexual Records

Today I stumbled across this page from a site called World Sexual Records. It offers a variety of fun sexual statistics that you may wish to file away in the “I could bring this up at a dinner party and shock everyone” category. Stuff like: * According to the Center for Marital and Sexual Studies in Long Beach, California, the most orgasms recorded in an hour for a woman is Read More …

The Times On Women Who Like Gay Porn

The Times has an advice column about women liking gay porn. The sage wisdom is offered by two individuals in this case, Suzi Godson and the unusually named Dr Thomas Stuttaford. Suzi comes across all relaxed and cheerful about women liking gay porn. Her thoughts on the appeal to straight women are simple, and well-put: “In comparison with the podgy Swedish bloke with a blonde mullet and the ageing alcoholic Read More …

Chastity Belts Gone Feral

Several major news outlets, including MSNBC have reported on the controversial exhibition in Memphis by techno-metal artist Ira Sherman called “Impenetrable Devices.” Ira has created a variety of wearable metal objects that are essentially chastity belts mixed with body armor. The belts feature barbed wire, mousetraps, electrified metal, razors and – eep! – “cutlery functions”. He was inspired to make the items after talking with women who had been raped. Read More …

The lusty-tragic life of male strippers

The Tyee has a behind-the-scenes article about male strippers, complete with rather nice b&w photo. The story profiles various male dancers, both nude and non-nude, and looks at their motivations and ambitions. What’s interesting about this article is the way it portrays the female audience. For the male strippers themselves, the women at their strip shows are somewhat scary.”Women can be aggressive,” says Casey. “Sometimes the girls get mad and Read More …

The silicon sex toy pioneers

Did you know that silicon is the best and safest substance from which to manufacture sex toys. It’s non-porous, easy to sterilise and feels good. And did you know that it’s only in the last ten years that sex toys have been made from silicon? Because adult products are still under that whole “novelty use only” cloud, many sex toys haven’t been of the best quality, and a lot are Read More …

Sundance festival features male masturbation short film

This year’s Sundance Film Festival will feature Destricted, seven short films shown together as one. What’s noteworthy about this is that the seven films are all explicit forays into the world of sex. Described as “hornographic”, the films depict a man having sex with a deforestation machine, another with “autoerotic epilepsy” and a number of porn star auditions. Of most interest to this blog is Sam Taylor-Wood’s eight-minute film depicting Read More …
