Penis Puppetry Leads To D-Cuppetry

The stars of the D-Cuppetry comedy showI’ve long been a fan of Puppetry of the Penis. I’ve even interviewed the Aussie stars twice for For The Girls, and had a few amusing photos taken with them. One of the things I asked the guys was did they think there’d ever be a female version of their show.

They said no. Girls bits weren’t really meant for puppetry, they thought, and besides, you would be able to see the lips moving.

Well, it turns out the guys were wrong.

Australian comedian Emma Powell has ploughed $10,000 of her own money into a show called D-Cuppetry: Dance of the D-Cups at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

“D-CUPPETRY will reveal that there are tonnes more uses for the breast than feeding our babies or pleasing our men (or women). And that the natural process of time and gravity can actually be quite useful when it comes to having somewhere to keep the car keys or give the family a bit of a laugh with “The Sound of One Tit Clapping”.

Sounds like a blast.

The Melbourne Age has a great article about the challenges faced by female comedians. Right now, it looks like Emma’s biggest challenge is telling everyone that D-Cuppetry is not a strip show.

“It’s not erotic. I’ve got a couple of friends and I said, ‘look , it’s not sexual at all,’ and they went, ‘hmm, breast, no sex and not sexual. Can’t imagine that.’ And I went, ‘OK, I’ll tuck them into my pants.’ And they went, ‘yeah, OK, that’s not sexy at all’.”

The Penis Puppeteers faced the same problem, spending copious amounts of time assuring people their show wasn’t sexual at all, and encountering all sorts of censorship issues on the way.

It’s kind of sad that there has to be an official disconnect between any hint of eroticism for something like this to be taken seriously. Nudity is not allowed to serve a dual role in our society – it’s either sexy, or it’s art, and never the twain shall meet.

In any case, I hope Emma’s show is a huge success.
