I have an acquaintance who is very involved in the gratitude movement. This is a broad philosophical stance that is linked with positive thinking and it’s basically about looking at what you already have and feeling grateful for it. It’s about being mindful of the moment and being determined to see the good in things. Studies have found that having a grateful positive outlook has an impact on general wellbeing and reduces the incidence of stress and depression.

Gratitude is not necessarily a religious thing, though plenty of religious people practice it. You don’t have to feel grateful to anyone or anything. You just have to feel grateful for it. As a non-religious person myself, I quite like this idea. It’s a life-affirming way of thinking and a really deliberate attempt to seek happiness.
While I wouldn’t call myself part of the movement, I do feel that it resonates with me. I can get very frustrated with the world at times; gratitude is a good way out of that.
This film came about because I found the song Winter of our Gratitude by Ivan Chew on CCMixter and I really liked it. The lyrics suggested sensuality combined with love and I wanted to do something with it. I decided to assemble clips from all the straight couples on Bright Desire, finding some of the most endearing and sensual moments. I wanted to show images of connection and joy – the general vibe of BD, as it were. I slowed them down and made them black and white, just so it looked a bit arty.
The end result may not really qualify as “porn”; I don’t think this film is guaranteed to get you off. But I know it makes me smile and it warms my heart. For me, it captures those really special moments during sex when you feel simply happy and grateful to be sharing yourself with someone else.
Sappy, yes. But I like it. I hope you do too.
