With the exception of Basic Instinct, I see those titles and wince a little. They’re not exactly Oscar-quality stuff. I figure if you’re going to sit through dodgy acting and 80s hair you might just as well go with the porn.
I’m sitting here trying to think of other mainstream films exist that might titillate a little. It’s a difficult list to construct, as so many films are erotic without being explicit. Are we talking pseudo-porn or good movies that stimulate the brain and the clit?
I’d recommend Bound, the lesbian thriller by the Wachowski Brothers for it’s gorgeously realistic dyke love scene.
I also found Kama Sutra: A Tale Of Love to be quite gorgeous, and it’s got a good engaging storyline too.
Dare I suggest Last Tango in Paris, or is there too much butter (and fat Marlon Brando) involved?
Henry and June is often recommended by others, although I haven’t got around to seeing it yet.
Y Tu Mamá También features a full-on threesome with two guys and a girl, and I know that’s a winner with lots of you.
I’m not sure if I should mention the films of Catherine Breillat (e.g. Romance). They feature actual sex (and Rocco Siffredi) but the stories are so depressing and the characters so unappealing that you don’t know whether to reach for the vibrator or the valium.
You can always opt for Shortbus or 9 Songs, although I’m not sure they fit into this “mainstream” list because of their real sex and alternative vision.
