Eurovision Goes Gay

I loved it when Lordi won the Eurovision song contest last year. It was a triumph of pure entertainment over plastic, over-marketed pop, and I was pleased.

This year it seemed that fluid sexuality was a theme. The over-the-top drag antics of Ukraine came second, and the bisexual, camp glitter of Sweden’s entry was very enjoyable. The winner, Serbia’s Marija Serifovic, performed what seemed to be a lesbian love song called “Prayer of Love”, complete with meaningful hand-clasping and butch suits. I haven’t found any official reports that Marija is a lesbian but it’s hard not to read some kind of dyke politics into the performance.

This report gives credence to the idea that Serbia’s entry is a gay song:

The victory also gave hope to Serbia’s tiny and harassed gay community, who celebrated the lesbian chic-tinged performance as a rare sight in the conservative Christian Orthodox country.

“A big win for Serbia, a small step for gay rights!” said one partygoer, leaving Belgrade’s only gay-friendly club.

Here’s the English lyrics taken from the official Eurovision site.

I’m wide awake
An empty bed drives my dreams away
Life melts like ice
Disappears in the twinkling of an eye

I’m losing my mind,
Pushing reality out of sight
Our lips are touching softly
You’re the one I believe blindly

I walk around like crazy
Falling in love frightens me
Days are like wounds
Countless and hard to get through

Prayer…
It burns my sore lips like a fire
Prayer…
Thy name is something I admire
Heaven knows just as well as I do
So many times I have cried over you
Heaven knows just as well as I do
I pray and live only for you

I can’t lie to God
as I kneel down and pray
You’re the love of my life
That’s the only thing I can say
