The lusty-tragic life of male strippers

The Tyee has a behind-the-scenes article about male strippers, complete with rather nice b&w photo. The story profiles various male dancers, both nude and non-nude, and looks at their motivations and ambitions.

All The Way Jay, male stripperWhat’s interesting about this article is the way it portrays the female audience. For the male strippers themselves, the women at their strip shows are somewhat scary.”Women can be aggressive,” says Casey. “Sometimes the girls get mad and pick a fight. One woman chased me out of the bar and yelled at me on the street.” The guys are often propositioned by eager ladies and grabbed while they’re dancing. “Girls are worse than men, more piggish,” says California Kid. “They think they can grab you and get anything from you. I just think, ‘I wouldn’t touch you with a ten foot pole.’ But it’s kinda flattering.”

The poor babies. What a lusty-tragic flattering distressing life it is.

Having interviewed a couple of male strippers for For The Girls, I’ve heard similar stories. But the ones I talked to enjoyed what they did and revelled in the attention they received. Many didn’t have girlfriends, and were happy to accept the attentions of female fans.

Male strip shows are definitely different. It’s not just about sex, although there is an element of sexual expression present. It’s also about letting go of inhibitions, about not being the “nice girl” that society expects you to be. Nice girls don’t scream or grab or even look at penises. There’s also that hint of female bonding. Male strip shows are invariably attended by groups of women, all giggling together and egging each other on. It’s a way to break down barriers, to be naughty together, although I wouldn’t say it was Sapphic in any real sense of the word.

The article also discusses women’s relationship to the male body. domain check A lot of women say they don’t find a naked man sexy, yet they’re screaming their guts out when the guy rips of his pants.
I’ve been to numerous male strip shows, both as a mere customer and as a reporter. I know that each time, I’ve found the guys on stage have elicited a primal erotic response from me. I’ve also happily screamed like an idiot and thought “what the hell am I doing?” at the same time.

I think a lot of women have these multi-layered responses, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I’d say it’s more a matter of knowing you’re being manipulated and entertained, and deciding just to enjoy it.

PS. Pic is of All The Way Jay, whom we photographed for a profile in FTG. Jay’s a great bloke, who loves what he does. We caught his stage show when he was in Brisbane, although he’d realised by that time it was illegal to get fully nude in Australia (his first performance had the Aussie girls nearly fainting). His act in Britain involves full nudity. Naturally, we got him to pose for us and take it all off.
