Birthday

35th birthdayI grow old, I grow old, I shall wear the bottom of my trousers rolled…

Today I turn 35. This is freaking me out a little bit. 35 feels like a marker, a turning point. When you’re 35, you can’t be classified as “young” anymore. I’ve tipped over the edge, heading for middle age. That’s pretty scary, especially because in my mind I’m still only 25. I don’t think anyone ever is prepared for the way years creep up on you. Even 70 year olds have a self image of a young person.

My dad says the 30s are the time of your life. He’s right, I know.

Time, by Pink Floyd, has been in my head all week:

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines…

Pic is from here.

  1. Happy Birthday Ms Naughty my fellow Cancerian! I am quite sure that your plans will come to much more than naught and I always enjoy your scribbled lines!

    Hope the year is wonderful!

  2. Thanks for the good wishes everyone. I had a good day, especially when we encountered the bar that was giving away free drinks. Now I have a hangover.

And happy birthday to you Ell. 🙂

  3. Thanks sweetness, I’m not sure why, but this one hasn’t fueled me with the terror of the last one – well, not quite as much!
