Sex News: Women’s Erotica and Porn Bans

Women’s erotica pulls in big money – German adult chain Beate Uhse has announced they’re going to ramp up their marketing to women.

We have talked for months with a lot of women,” said company spokeswoman Doreen Schink. They want “to be addressed in a loving, tongue-in-cheek way.”  More than 80 per cent of the group’s products are already developed for women, who represent about 60 per cent of its customers.

In Britain-wants-to-ban-porn news:

David Cameron’s war on porn lacks a smoking gun – Great piece by Martin Robbins discussing the lack of evidence behind the anti-porn filter campaign in the UK

What glamour models have to say about lad’s mags and page 3 – Frankie Mullin actually bothered to ask the women who work in adult about their thoughts on censorship and feminism.

So, Sophie, I ask, are you a feminist? I expect her to say yes. She’s bright, articulate, financially independent. Instead she laughs in an appalled sort of way.

“No, I’m not,” she says. “Of course not. Feminists want to ban Page 3.”

The truth about pornography: It’s time for a rude awakening – Archie Bland spends three-quarters of his piece talking about how embarrassing it is to admit to porn. But he finally makes his point near the end:

What if we ditched the stigma carried by pornography in general, and instead attached it, loudly, to the pornography that we consider to be unacceptable?

Meanwhile, in Australia, a sex worker was brutally murdered. The media response to this was to diminish the crime, in stark contrast the to the high-profile case of Jill Meagher a few months ago. In response SA Jones wrote: Why I changed my mind about sex work

I feel uneasy about sex work. I worry that it objectifies women and compounds our difficulties in carving a place for ourselves as cerebral and corporeal, as full persons. But here’s the thing: it’s not about me.

  1. Beate Uhse going for women sounds a bit like MacDonald’s going for dining gourmets. Sounds very nice on paper but the company’s reputation is so bad for women, they will go elsewhere since other stores came up with this idea years ago.
