Halloween, Sex, Violence and… Tax

Halloween babe. It’s the 31st October – Halloween in the US and increasingly in Australia as well. I never experienced Halloween as a kid but apparently it’s becoming popular in Australian cities now.

Some people feel that the encroachment of this American holiday here in Oz is a sort of cultural imperialism. I’m not sure what to think of it, to be honest. I read today that some Christians here are up in arms about the emergence of a “Satanic, pagan holiday” that celebrates the occult. So naturally that makes me all for it. Anything that upsets the Christians can’t be too bad. On the other hand, given the recent controversy over the sexualisation of young girls costumes… maybe that’s not something we want to see here. (Unless it’s SEXY MUSTARD)

The other thing about Halloween is that it has become a celebration of horror. It’s kind of weird that there’s such an embrace of blood, gore and violence. But then again, the US has always been more tolerant and encouraging of violence than of sex.

Halloween is really the old Celtic/pagan festival of Samhain, the day of the dead, and that’s where the zombies and ghosts come in. It’s a celebration of the turning of seasons, when the days grow shorter, Autumn gives way to Winter and the Crone comes into her own.

Here in the southern hemisphere it’s exactly the opposite. We should be celebrating Beltane tonight, jumping over fires and sneaking off into the bushes to fuck like rabbits to celebrate the Springtime. Which is another reason why Halloween doesn’t quite feel right in this country.

For Aussie adults, October 31 really not very much fun at all. It’s the day our tax returns are due. We’ve only just finished and lodged them. It took a couple of wines to get there, but now I’m full of that heady euphoria that only comes with finishing the yearly tax return. Phew!

Now it’s time to watch the classic first episode of Black Books when Bernard is desperate to avoid doing his tax. We’ve been quoting it all day.
