My new favorite filmmaker Petra Joy is currently working on her third film, a follow up to Female Fantasies, which I raved about in this post.
She’s also started a blog detailing her adventures in filmmaking which makes for fascinating reading. Aside from updates on filming and editing, she’s given us an insight into how difficult it is for indie producers to get their product onto the shelves.
She reveals that a distribution deal fell apart because of a disagreement over what should go on the cover:

The cracks between the co-operation began to show when they emailed me their favourite DVD packaging: a single woman with silicon boobs, her face airbrushed to the extreme against a white background. It was the typical high key porn look that the Americans tend to create for the blokes to enjoy. The kind of image I would use when I do a porn parody. When I explained that I would like them to use my stills on the cover of my films and that the image should show a couple or a hunky man rather than artificially enhanced porn star, they pulled the plug.
All I asked for was having input in the cover design of my own movie and an approval of the final, soft cut.
Am I asking too much?
No, Petra, I don’t think you are.
One of the biggest problems for the porn-loving woman out there is that so much of the porn industry has calcified into cliches, assumptions and by-the-book methods. Too many producers simply can’t get their head around the idea that a woman might want something a little bit different. Indeed, a lot of men are sick of the same old stuff as well.
Petra’s film is so unabashedly made for straight women. It doesn’t even try and cater to a typical male porn audience (although there’s plenty there for an intelligent man to enjoy) and that’s what’s so fabulous about it. It’s hardcore erotica with a real sense of beauty about it and a determination to put female pleasure first.
I’m so thrilled to see Petra break out of the mould, I want to get the word out to as many people as possible about her work. Her films are self-funded and she does her own distribution so they’re a little harder to obtain than most movies.
You can get them at Harmony stores in London, Wild and Wicked in Australia, Lustundliebe in Austria and Erotikmarkt in Switzerland.
You can also download it from Strictly Broadband.
I’ll say it again – Female Fantasies is the best porn for women movie I’ve ever seen.
This Saturday For The Girls features an interview with Petra as our feature article for the month.
