I like to report on research that shows how women are visually stimulated and enjoy porn.
Well, as with all research, there’s a study for everything and today I’ve found one which apparently contradicts all my views (and previously reported research) on women and erotica.

Scientists at the Centre for Neuroeconomic Studies at Duke University in North Carolina found that men’s brains register a “reward” when they look at photos of women, whereas women’s brains did not react the same way.
The survey published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B said that brain scan studies show that “reward centres” are triggered in men when they gaze at a woman’s face or body whereas they are not in females. It also shows men are more likely to make an effort to view pictures of the opposite sex and pay out money.
The findings shed light on why men are much greater consumers of pornography than women and why sales of Playboy have always exceeded those of Playgirl…
I think it’s my duty to be skeptical about this, so here’s a few thoughts:
1. I can think of other reasons why women don’t buy Playgirl.
2. The study was only done on a small sample of people – 20 men and 20 women.
3. The photos they were shown were non-pornographic. I think it’s a long bow to draw to say that women don’t like porn when the study didn’t involve it.
4. The study seemed to focus on the idea of “physical attractiveness” which might be considered something different to seeking out sexual stimulation.
Of course, this study could be entirely correct, in which case I’ve been wasting my time for the last seven years.
