Petra Joy and Female Fantasies

Petra Joy, UK adult filmmakerI think I have to feel officially embarrassed that I haven’t encountered Petra Joy before.

Petra is a UK-based photographer and erotic film maker who has been comfortable behind a camera since age 11. In the eighties she worked for an adult program on German TV and has developed her vision for authentic women’s erotica over many years.

In 2003 she launched Strawberry Seductress, an erotic photography studio for women and couples. She has also independently shot and released two erotic films for women: Sexual Sushi and Female Fantasies.

Her motto is “Feeling it, not faking it!”.The films features real life lovers (s)exploring each other with passion, intimacy and creativity. No awkward dialogue or amateur acting – just a pure sensual, visual feast, edited to sexy music. The films were created by a woman for women and men who believe that their biggest sex organ is not between their legs but between their ears.

Female Fantasies has really got my interest. The fantasies depicted are based on ideas submitted by Petra’s female friends and customers. It sounds amazing:

The fantasies featured in the film vary greatly and go far beyond the cliché of “romance and roses”. From being totally pampered by two men at once or a whole group of people to having sex with a stranger in a public place or tasting a woman for the first time – all of the inspirational scenarios in “Female Fantasies” focus on female pleasure rather than male satisfaction. Rather than repeating graphic shots of penetration and male ejaculation all over again, “Female Fantasies” celebrates seduction and sensuality. The film also touches on some of the great porn taboos such as male bisexuality and women using a strap-on dildo on men. “Female Fantasies” aims to sexually inspire, excite and liberate women.

I’m pretty keen to get my hands on these films, but it is going to take a while. They’re available in sex shops in the UK, but they’re only available online through European, non-English speaking retailers. I’d love it if some US distributors or adult stores would sell these movies.

Both websites have trailers for the films, and they look wonderful. So nice to discover another talent working to make erotic movies for women.

And thanks to Erika Lust for pointing me towards Petra’s site.

  1. I thought the trailer for Female Fantasies had a lot to recomend it; certainly a hell of a lot more nice things to look at than anything I’ve seen come out of the 818. Two reservations: one about the trailer and one about the Petra’s philosophy.

    1) In my opinion the music was key to the trailer working, but it sounded like a bit of “real” pop music, ie the sort of thing that costs more for clearence than the entire budget for most porn movies. Whenever I hear quality pop music in a porn trailer, I can’t help but wonder if the producers secured rights, and if sound track to the full length movie is going to live up to the promises the trailer makes. Lots of cinematic ideas that work really well when there’s a good piece of music driving them fall flat when they poor or no score.

    2) The whole “women know what women want” thing is so completely played out if I never hear it again it will be too soon. Njoy, some of the very nicest toys ever made are designed by, wait for it, a man. Some of the most scathing things I’ve ever read about a sex toy have been written about, you guessed, sex toys designed by women.

The forces, both economic and creative (like trying to get rights to kick ass music), that effect they have on the creation of sexually explicit art are is vast that they largely overwhelm whatever gender-based differences a director brings to their work.
