Thanks to CAKE, I’ve now seen the uncensored trailer for Shortbus, and it’s quite the ride. I feel the need to embed the video in my own blog.
Quite the promo piece. Vibrators, orgies, masturbation, flogging, autofellatio and one helluva strange sexual position that could well be called “the helicopter.”

Apparently Shortbus is about one woman’s search for an orgasm. She can’t have them at the beginning, and does her best to achieve one as the movie goes on. “Shortbus” is the name of the secret salon where the main characters meet for intellectual discussions… and sex.
Clearly this film has far too much actual sex and will need to be censored within an (angry) inch of its life. Nope, I don’t care if it’s got an interesting storyline and social comment. People MIGHT GET TURNED ON!! And that must be stopped at all costs.
Here’s an article from 2004 about John Cameron Mitchell’s search for funding.
What’s the difference, really, between this and pornography? He’s got an answer: The purpose of pornography is to arouse, whereas here, he said, “the priority is the emotional life of the characters.”
Sex, said Mitchell, “has been cheapened by porn.”
“Why can’t we not focus on sex, as porn does, but make sex part of the film?” he asked.
Seems that Mr Mitchell needs to make the distinction between nasty old porn and art. Hopefully one day artists won’t need to take that high moral ground to get their movies funded and distributed.
I haven’t seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch. It’s one of those films I’ve seen on the shelf at the video shop and never bothered to rent. Looks like I need to get hiring.
Shortbus looks like a fascinating film. I get the feeling the only way I’ll see an uncensored version here in Australia is if I downlowd it. Unless, of course, the OFLC decides that it’s “art” and therefore safe for us plebians to enjoy.
Keep porn and art seperate. The sex in the movie is not realistic who has sex like that? no one sucks their selves in real life except screwed up people. Some of the sex on there is more crazy then pornos.
