The BBC have alerted me to a new online tool called Google Trends. This site analyses which cities and regions are most looking for particular search terms.
Thus it is that the BBC has concluded that “Birmingham tops web porn search” because that city comes up number one for the search term “porn”. Manchester in the UK is second, with Brisbane in Australia coming third.
What’s fascinating about that search term trend is that the first US city listed (St Louis) is ranked at number 7. And here I was thinking that the US was the biggest porn market in the world. Seems the British and we Aussies keener for it than the the fine, upstanding citizens of America.

Naturally I had to try a few search terms of my own. Turns out that the people of Milton Keynes, UK, are very keen on finding porn for women. So a big hello out there to all my friends in Milton Keynes, I’ll have to come and visit.
And I’m proud to say that my home capital city of Brisbane tops the chart when it comes to looking for naked men. They just beat out the stiff competition from eager searchers in Perth. Ah Queensland. Perfect one day, pervy the next.
Is this Google Trends tool accurate? I don’t know. I think they must be calculating their numbers on a per capita basis rather than just adding up sheer numbers. Otherwise I’m sure New York, London and other populous cities would figure higher on the stats.
Here’s the results of a few other experiments:
“Big Dicks” – Atlanta, US
“Cunnilingus” – Lyon, France
“Blowjobs” – St Louis, US
“Erotica” – Delhi, India
“Anal sex” – Ankara, Turkey
“Abstinence” – Washington, US
“Abortion” – Washington, US
“Miserable failure” – Lyon, France
The search term “figging” belongs, not surprisingly, to San Francisco. Notice how in this case you can see the birth of the word, sometime early in 2004.
The same can be said of the word “pegging” which was coined by Dan Savage to refer to male-female strapon sex. Weirdly, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia wins that one (with San Francisco second).
Be careful with this site. You could be there all day.
