This PSA has been put together by the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee, a group of US performers including big names Stoya, James Deen, Nina Hartley and Jessica Drake, who got together in August 2013 and decided it was time to work towards a better porn industry.

This is a pretty big development. One of the biggest obstacles to ethical production has been that performers are often solo workers without the force of a union or lobby group behind them, making it easier for them to be mistreated. Now that there’s an advocacy group, things might get better.

Stoya has written about the group and their video in New Statesman:

I was overjoyed at the amount of support shown by both the performer community and people who have absolutely no stake in the adult film industry, but I also couldn’t help thinking that it’s kind of absurd that people sometimes make it to 18 or 22 without knowing at least the basics of this stuff.

For instance: “You always have the right to say No, and you do not have to defend or explain your choice. ‘I don’t want to’ is a perfectly good reason for saying No.”

She also gives a list of 8 basic guidelines for good, consensual sex and then recommends that condom companies put these on the packers/wrappers. Good idea!

    1. Glad you like it. Though I wasn’t personally involved, the video is by a performer’s organization in the US.
