Feminist Porn Awards 2013: I Got An Honorable Mention!

You may have noticed the blog has been dead for a while. That’s because I was preparing for my trip to Canada and then I’ve spent nearly 3 weeks here, travelling about and then attending the Feminist Porn Awards and Conference from April 4 to 6. Plus I shot two solo scenes with Jiz Lee and Courtney Trouble – more info on that soon.

It’s been a wonderful time and I have SO much to blog about. Indeed, I should have written some posts up already but I’ve been busy sightseeing and generally coming down after a huge week (or couple of months, to be honest). Today it’s freezing outside with ice pellets and snow so I might as well blog a bit.

The most exciting news is that my film Connections: Real Couples, Joyful Sex received an Honorable Mention at the awards on Friday night. What can I say, I’m thrilled to finally have my own Feminist Porn Award after following and reporting on the event for the last 8 years. It was also incredible to finally be at the awards in person and partake in the friendly, kinky atmosphere that pervades the event.

The other cool thing is that fellow Australian Gala Vanting also received an Honorable Mention for her film Amber and she also showed her short film Taken at the Public Provocative Porn screening on Thursday night. This means that a total of three Australians have now received Feminist Porn Awards (Anna Brownfield won for The Band in 2010, plus Liandra Dahl was nominated a couple of years ago). I’m so proud that Australia has such a thriving, ethical, feminist porn industry and that we are an example of how porn can be more diverse, female-friendly, positive and well-made.

The trip to Canada is the first time I’ve really “outed” myself in public (although winning the Petra Joy Award in 2009 was a little bit out). I’ve always been nervous about putting my face out there for a number of reasons, one of which involves the fact that I live in a small town and value my privacy there. But sometimes you’ve just got to say fuck it and be bold, so I did that. Thus, this pic.

I want to congratulate all the other winners of the awards. I consider many of them to be friends and it’s great to see their work recognized. I also want to congratulate all the nominees. This year there were so many and I am very keen to seek out all these new films and enjoy them. It seems that more and more people are making their own porn and doing their best to make it creative, ethical and positive. YAY US.

As I said, I have a lot more to blog about including longer descriptions of the awards night and screening, plus my experiences at the Feminist Porn Conference where I gave a presentation on porn for women. There’s also the experiences of shooting along with a more in-depth discussion of some of the issues and dramas that emerged from the whole event.

We fly home tomorrow and I’m not looking forward to 24 hours on the plane and the accompanying jetlag. We’re also travelling with Korean Air and have a 6 hour stopover in South Korea so I’m hoping Kim Il Whacko doesn’t go completely insane while we’re there and can keep the nukes in his pants.

In the meantime, perhaps I should go and have a final frolic in the freezing cold. One thing Canada has taught me: Australian winters are piss-easy and I should stop whinging about the cold. Because 17 degrees C is positively fucking BALMY compared to Canada.
