Pelvic Simulators

Female pelvic simulator model. I think many women have got their own personal horror stories about pap smears or pelvic exams. That’s why it’s nice to know that computers are helping student doctors learn how to perform invasive exams before they ever get their hands anywhere near one’s twat.

There are now pelvic exam simulators that allow students to get their hands dirty, as it were. Yep, companies such as Limbs and Things offer delightful range of plastic vulvas, vaginas, anuses and rectums available for poking and probing in nice, clinical, non-embarrassing surroundings.

Many of them were created by Dr. Carla Pugh. This article by Reuters gives a nice overview of her work and how the simulators are used.

During the Northwestern class, training is hands-on. Simulators are arranged at various stations according to exam type. At the prostate station, for example, several models of the male posterior are arranged on a table in various positions.

Inside each plastic model — yes, they have a fully formed anus and rectum — are paper-thin sensors that measure a student’s touch and send individual readings to an attached computer monitor.

Students show up at the station for a brief overview from an instructing physician and then moments later, fingers are inserted, line readings from sensors go up and down on the computer screen, questions are asked and answered.

Scatological humor is inevitable. An instructor assures a student that, yes, you can tell a patient it’s OK to pass wind if necessary during the exam and ask for a warning first.

Looking at the female simulators, I can’t help but feel they’re missing a few bits. Like the clitoris. And the labia. And pubic hair. These things are supposed to help doctors with “recognition of anatomy and appropriate landmarks” so I can’t help but feel we’ve been a bit shortchanged here. Yes, they’re more for internal examation training, but surely they could have made the outside look a bit more realistic?

Then again, if you wanted the real thing you’d need a full simulated woman wearing her best underwear who’s worried about the hair on her legs and who may or may not have applied glitter spray beforehand.
