A couple of weeks ago Violet Blue wrote about her experience as a guest on the Tyra Banks show which was inspired by her O article about women and porn (Violet’s post<\/a>, my thoughts on it<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Despite speculation that the show wouldn’t see the light of day, it did in fact go to air on October 8th. Here’s the show recap<\/a> at Tyra’s site (just in case you’re desperate to know what Tyra wore). There’s also a video rundown here<\/a> (although I’m not sure how long it will stay on that page.<\/p>\n

YouTube has three clips sourced direct from the Tyra show so I thought I’d include them here.<\/p>\n

The first is the deliberately confrontational setup where “average” women watch porn and then discuss it in heated tones:

The second gives us the fabulous Nina Hartley talking about the beauty of choice. She’s so articulate here, it makes me want to stand up and cheer.

“Society uses women to control each other,” she says. “The good girls get to gang up on the bad girls to keep us in line… I like that in the feminist movement we get to have our choices instead of ‘the box.'”<\/p>\n

I’m not going to embed the third one (just because it will slow the blog down too much). It’s a vox pop segment<\/a> asking people on the street about porn.<\/p>\n

I’ll never be able to see the whole show – it’s not screened in Australia – so I still haven’t seen the bits with Violet Blue, or Candida. It’s interesting that the clips made available on Youtube focus on the conflict and display a general amazement that women would even like porn in the first place. Certainly there’s no discussion about what sort of female friendly porn is available.<\/p>\n

Then again, maybe that’s how things are out in suburbia; there are a lot of women who find mainstream porn to be “disgusting” or offensive, so perhaps it’s a reasonable representation. Most of the “average” women were older (say 40 or so) and perhaps their views reflect those of a different generation. Of course, that’s no excuse to go feral like they did.<\/p>\n

And, as Fleshbot<\/a> points out, what movie were they watching?<\/p>\n

Also, I don’t think saying that “porn is educational” is a good flag to wave in favour of porn. Fact is, having standard porno sex is probably a really good way for a woman to end up sore, semen-eyed and unsatisfied.
