Feminist Porn Awards 2012 – Winners

Feminist porn awardsIt’s that time of year again when Toronto goes rather queer and hosts Good for Her’s annual Feminist Porn Awards, now in it’s 7th year. I’ve been wanting to go since it started but circumstances always seem to prevent it.

A few articles from the leadup to the event. Most notable was this piece from major paper the Globe and Mail. Unfortunately it was negative in places because it decided to take the “porn versus art” angle and decided that porn could never be art. I left a long comment there under my Louise Lush pseudonym, pointing out that porn versus art is an unnecessary dichotomy and that just because something is arousing doesn’t mean it’s not art.

The Daily Beast has just put up a piece on Feminist porn and naturally Gail Dines gets a platform to declare us all anti-feminists. I left a comment there too.

Xtra had a piece called Getting Hot and Bothered. Torontoist also did a straight-up piece.

I was watching the live stream of the show right up until Buck Angel started stripping and the stream company pulled the plug for violating the terms of service. Obviously low-quality streaming Man Pussy is beyond the pale for UStream.

Interesting that this year they have expanded on the number of award categories. This is the first year a short has received its own award. Same with lesbian vignette and best adaption (which seems to have just been created solely for Last Tango). What stands out this time around is that there’s no category for gay films, or for straight or trans or queer vignette. Perhaps this is because there were no submissions of those types of films. Or perhaps the focus on female pleasure means the guys don’t get a look-in.

I was nominated again for an award, this time for my feature The Thought Of Her, which is an erotic male masturbation film. I didn’t win. I’m going to explain this terrible miscarriage of awardy justice by saying that there’s really only one category I might possibly fit into (straight). And a film with only straight white guys in it probably didn’t stand much of a chance. That’s my excuseplanation and I’ll hug it to myself while I’m crying into my chardonnay tonight and whining over the fact that I keep getting passed over. Why god, whhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyy???

Actually, I’m just pleased that this year best straight film went to Petra Joy, who is well overdue for some recognition of her work. I loved The Female Voyeur and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

And I offer my warm congratulations to all the winners and nominees for this year. It think it’s great that there’s such a solid and growing group of people keen to make positive, feminist porn.
