AVN Roundtable On Marketing To Women

I missed this when it happened – perhaps because AVN isn’t such a great site for discovering useful stuff like this. Still, better late than never.

The AVN expo in January held a special seminar called “What Women Want”, aiming to discuss the needs of female consumers when it comes to porn and sex toys. Given the title of the forum and the fact that it was AVN I was not expecting much. Turns out that this roundtable was a bit more open-minded and productive than previous efforts by the big wigs of porn. At least, that’s how it sounds in this article.

Participants were Kimberly Wilson and Shirley Isaacson, partners in Lennox Films and Inpulse Digital TV; Joanne Mason, marketing v.p. of Australia-based Abbywinters.com; feature director Kelly Holland, now executive producer with Penthouse Media Group; Alicia Relles, Babeland video buyer; and veteran retailer Kim Airs of GrandOpenings.com.

Holland answered the endlessly vexing question of what women want with one word: “Everything.”

They discussed popular videos and sex toys, and basically said that women were after good quality adult products. Imagine that?

Wilson lamented that though there “so many women in the adult industry, so few are involved in creating entertainment for women.”

Holland asserted that “the women’s market is the only growth market,” maintaining that women will spend their dollars on adult merchandise if it is properly marketed. “They must be reached effectively.

I almost wish I’d been there. Actually, I guess the question was – why wasn’t I invited? While the other luminaries on the panel all have experience in marketing to women, the representative of online porn was Abby Winters, which is not a site FOR women. Yes, they are female-run and sex positive but their content is still ultimately aimed at men.

Ah well, I guess you can’t win ’em all.
