Clitoris Vs Vagina

Australian patron of anti-feminist backlash sentiments, Bettina Arndt, has written an opinion piece berating all those nasty 70s feminists, particularly Shere Hite, for “oppressing” women who have orgasms via intercourse. She’s claiming that new research into the nerve endings of the vagina has made the old vag “fashionable” again after decades of “clitoromania.”

Thankfully, Emma Tom has her own spin on this rather over-the-top piece:

A better response to Whipple and Komisaruk’s book would be to celebrate their findings as a welcome expansion to female pleasure-seeking principles rather than using their research as yet another excuse for the tired old habit of feminist flagellation.

Here’s where I stand: I’m all for the clitoris, mainly because all the surveys show that women who get off via direct stimulation of the little man in the boat are a MAJORITY – about 70% of all women. On top of that, Helen O’Connell’s research has proven that the clit is fucking huge… and most likely accounts for a large amount of vaginal sensation.

What Arndt seems to be trying to do is make “clitoral” women feel guilty. Which is just stupid and unnecessary.

If you’re one of those women who can get off from penetration alone, good for you. According to the lingering myths about how sex should be, you’re “normal.” The majority of heterosexual sexual acts still focus on penile penetration as the main goal, so you girls have hit the jackpot.

Now, if society could just stop teaching the other 70% that there’s something wrong with them, we’d all be much happier.

If I sound a little adamant on this topic, it’s because I’ve seen the same worried question asked of sex advice columns (including ours) over and over: “I can only come via manual stimulation or a vibrator, what’s wrong with me?”

As far as I’m concerned, we haven’t had nearly enough “clitoromania.”

Now… go and read Betty Dodson’s take on the vagina vs clitoris thing. She was one of the original, 70s feminists, and I believe the women of today owe her a great deal.

  1. An orgasm is an orgasm, and pleasure is pleasure, who cares about how either one is achieved??? If the tip of my nose would get me an orgasm, then the tip of my nose I would use!
