Sundance festival features male masturbation short film

This year’s Sundance Film Festival will feature Destricted, seven short films shown together as one. What’s noteworthy about this is that the seven films are all explicit forays into the world of sex. Described as “hornographic”, the films depict a man having sex with a deforestation machine, another with “autoerotic epilepsy” and a number of porn star auditions.

Of most interest to this blog is Sam Taylor-Wood’s eight-minute film depicting a man masturbating in the desert. The Guardian features an interview with the filmmaker, who avowedly claims the whole experience was uncomfortable and that it’s not really porn. According to NYMag, she gets more turned on “fantasizing about being in a tent with Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger than anatomical close-ups.”

Don’t we all?

Even so, it’s nice that this oh-so-arty foray into porn features a woman’s perspective of a man masturbating. She wanted it to be artistic, and to depict aloneness. It’s not supposed to be erotic, but there may be women out there who find it quite sexy.
Sundance opens on the 19th. Will be interesting to see what the audience reaction is.
